Valued Support
The Friends of the Moot Hall Organ were formed to bring Colchester’s historic Edwardian organ back to life. After a public meeting in 2008, chaired by Nigel Chapman, the group set out to raise funds and win support for a full restoration. Their optimism was fuelled by a report from organ expert Dr William McVicker, who confirmed the instrument’s historic and musical importance.
From curry lunches and prize draws to organ recitals by local stars like Ian Ray, David Drinkell, and Ashley Grote, fundraising gathered momentum. A highlight was the hugely popular Adopt a Pipe campaign, where supporters sponsored individual pipes to help the cause. With backing from the Essex Heritage Trust, the Hervey Benham Trust, and countless local supporters, the Friends met their ambitious £35,000 target.
In 2012, Colchester Borough Council – guided by Dr McVicker – secured a successful Heritage Lottery Fund bid, ensuring the organ’s full restoration.
